Where the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz stand after acquiring Patrick Beverley

Image
The  Los Angeles Lakers  acquire  Utah Jazz  guard  Patrick Beverley  in a trade, the team announced on Thursday. The deal sends Lakers guard  Talen Horton-Tucker  and forward  Stanley Johnson  to the Jazz. "We are thrilled to add Patrick Beverley's toughness and competitive spirit to our team," Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka said. "We're confident that Patrick's '3-and-D' style will fit in nicely with the other pieces of our roster and align perfectly with Coach Ham's philosophy of hard work and smart play." Beverley referenced the deal in a tweet Thursday morning, writing that he "woke up a Laker!" Beverley, 34, returns to Los Angeles after spending 2017 to 2021 with the  Clippers , bringing with him a well-established ferocity and defensive presence that new coach Darvin Ham is determined to implement into the defense that ranked 21st in the league last season. Beverley played a si...

Giants seem to avoid Azeez Ojulari injury calamity

Image
The Giants nearly got out of a practice session without one of their players going down. Azeez Ojulari, the second-year outside linebacker, was participating in the post-practice conditioning running with his teammates on Thursday following the joint practice with the Jets when he was forced to stop and came up limping. He left the field with the help of two medical/training personnel, slowly walking into the team facility. It is believed Ojulari suffered some sort of lower leg issue and the preliminary indication is it is not a serious injury. His availability in the near future, though, was not immediately known. Ojulari missed the first three weeks of training camp dealing with a strained hamstring. He led the team with eight sacks in 2021, setting a franchise rookie record. The Giants need what Ojulari brings to the field, especially with the other starting edge rusher, Kayvon Thibodeaux, out for 3-4 weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee in last Sunday’...

New York Giants lose promising WR Collin Johnson to torn Achilles

Image
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The  New York Giants  lost wide receiver  Collin Johnson  for the season Wednesday on the same day that veteran  Sterling Shepard  returned to the practice field. Johnson tore his Achilles tendon during Wednesday's practice, according to the team. The big receiver (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) out of Texas had been receiving first-team reps in recent weeks at practice with  Kadarius Toney  and Shepard among those on the sideline. Coach Brian Daboll had noted earlier in the week that Johnson and fellow wide receiver  David Sills  were making a strong impression. Johnson started Sunday's preseason win over the  Cincinnati Bengals  and had three receptions for 41 yards; Sills had five catches for 56 yards, with most of the damage coming with the first-string offense. "Collin Johnson, David Sills, they've stepped their game up," Daboll said. "And they're right in the mix, not just to make a team but to play....

Did Nets’ separate peace with Kyrie Irving lead to Kevin Durant’s return?

Did Nets’ separate peace with Kyrie Irving lead to Kevin Durant’s return? Could the Nets strategy to get Kevin Durant back in black-and-white have turned on something simple — make a separate peace with Kyrie Irving, then use proof of their good intentions with Irving to lure KD back? Or alternately, could Durant and manager Rich Kleiman’s strategy been similarly simple — get the Nets to deal with KD’s friend first, then we talk return? There is ample reporting that Durant was exasperated by more than the Nets stand on Irving’s contract and there certainly were a lot of factors that went into the decision announced Tuesday morning, things like Durant and the Nets both being surprised at the league’s low-ball offers for the 33-year-old and a realization by KD that Brooklyn was and is his best chance to win again. But a look at the chronology of events — and comments by Shams Charania Wednesday — might make you think that the Nets tackled their relationship with Irving first. then m...
